"Winter is not a season, it's a celebration." - Anamika Mishra
Winter is a magical time of year to say "I do." With snow-covered landscapes and cozy indoor venues, there's something truly special about a winter wedding. But planning a wedding during the winter months comes with its own set of challenges. Here are some tips to help you plan a winter wonderland wedding that's unforgettable.
1.Choose the Right Venue
Winter weddings are all about creating a warm and cozy atmosphere for you and your guests. When selecting a venue, consider a space with a fireplace or wood-burning stove to create a cozy ambiance. You can also add candles, string lights, and other warm lighting elements to enhance the cozy vibe., and parking that is easily accessible in the event of snow. You could even consider a venue that has outdoor space with a winter wonderland theme.
2. Embrace the Winter Theme
Winter is the perfect time to embrace a cozy, rustic theme for your wedding. Think warm blankets, roaring fireplaces, and hot cocoa bars. Incorporate seasonal elements into your decor, like pinecones, evergreen branches, and white flowers. And don't forget to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather!
3. Plan for Snowy Weather
Winter weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to plan ahead. Arrange for transportation for you and your guests in case of heavy snow or icy roads. Consider hiring a shuttle bus to transport guests from their hotel to the venue, and make sure your vendors have a plan in place for snowy weather.

4. Dress for the Weather
When planning a winter wedding, it's important to dress for the weather. Consider a dress with long sleeves or a faux fur wrap to keep warm. Your bridesmaids can wear long dresses with tights or leggings underneath. Don't forget to choose shoes that can handle snow and ice, and consider providing warm accessories for your guests like scarves, gloves, and blankets.
5. Serve Seasonal Foods and Drinks
Winter is the perfect season to serve warm and comforting food and drinks. Consider serving hot cocoa, mulled wine, or cider as a welcome drink. For the main course, opt for warm and hearty dishes like soup, roasted meat, or a hearty stew.. You could consider adding seasonal ingredients like squash and pumpkin to your menu. Warm up your guests with hot drinks like mulled wine and hot toddies, and consider a hot cocoa bar for dessert.
6. Consider Overlooked Details
There are a few details that are often overlooked when planning a winter wedding. For example, make sure your venue has plenty of coat racks and space for guests to remove their boots and winter gear. Consider providing hand warmers and blankets for your outdoor ceremony, and make sure your photographer has a plan for shooting in snowy conditions.
7. Invest in a good pair of winter boots to keep your feet warm and dry during outdoor photoshoots.
When it comes to winter weddings, outdoor photo sessions can be a little challenging due to the cold and snow. To ensure that you're comfortable and your feet are warm and dry, it's important to invest in a good pair of winter boots. Opt for boots that are waterproof, insulated, and have a good grip to avoid slips and falls.
8. Consider a fur coat or stole to wear with your wedding dress for added warmth.
A fur coat or stole can add a touch of luxury and glamour to your winter wedding look while keeping you warm and cozy. You can either purchase a real fur coat or opt for a faux fur alternative. A fur stole can be draped over your shoulders and can be a great addition to a strapless or sleeveless wedding dress.
9. Schedule your wedding ceremony earlier in the day to take advantage of daylight.
During the winter months, daylight hours are shorter, which means you have less time for outdoor photography. To maximize the available daylight, consider scheduling your wedding ceremony earlier in the day. This will give you more time for outdoor photo sessions and ensure that you capture the beautiful winter scenery in your photos.
10. Use seasonal winter flowers like white roses, holly, and mistletoe for your bouquet and centerpieces.
Flowers are an essential part of any wedding, and winter weddings are no exception. Seasonal winter flowers like white roses, holly, and mistletoe can add a festive touch to your bouquet and centerpieces. You can also incorporate pinecones, branches, and berries for a natural and rustic look.
11. Don't forget about the weather:
When planning a winter wedding, it's important to consider the weather conditions. Make sure to have a backup plan in case of a snowstorm or other inclement weather. This could include providing shuttle buses for guests or moving the ceremony indoors.
12. Hire a photographer with experience shooting winter weddings:
Winter weddings require a unique set of photography skills, and it's important to hire a photographer who has experience shooting in cold weather and low light conditions. As a Professional Wedding Photographer myself, winter has to be my favourite time of year for photography. Summer and Autumn weddings are getting booked quicker than ever, but to guarantee a date with me a winter wedding is always a safe bet!
"Winter weddings are like a snowflake – each one is unique, beautiful, and leaves a lasting impression." - Style Me Pretty
13. Add fairy lights and bulbs for atmosphere and bokeh:
Fairy lights and bulbs can add a magical and whimsical atmosphere to your winter wedding. They are perfect for creating a cozy and warm ambiance, especially during the reception. Not only do they create an inviting atmosphere, but they also make for great photo opportunities. So add as many little lights here and there to create a film like ambience.
(What is Bokeh you might ask?) When the lights are out of focus, they create a beautiful effect called bokeh. You've probably seen Bokeh balls in your favourite movies. Now you know what they are I bet you'll see them everywhere!
14. Take advantage of winter sports and activities:
If you're planning a winter wedding in a location that offers winter sports and activities, consider incorporating them into your wedding weekend. This could include skiing, ice skating, or even a snowshoeing adventure. Your guests will appreciate the opportunity to experience the winter wonderland while celebrating your big day.
